Dr. Mulat Demeke Desta
Mulat Demeke has a PhD from Strathclyde University (UK) in Development Economics (1989) and has been working for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) since 2008. Among his major tasks at the FAO Headquarters in Rome were providing technical advice to different countries on managing food price volatility, coordinating the publication of Regional Overview of Food Insecurity report (Latin America and Caribbean, Africa, Middle East and North Africa, Asia and Pacific, Europe and Central Asia), and conducting analytical work in the area of food and nutrition security. Since August 2016, he has been transferred to FAO/Kenya as a Senior Policy Officer to support the operationalization of the Food and Nutrition Security Impact, Resilience, Sustainability and Transformation (FIRST) programme in the country. His assignments in Kenya include supporting the Ministry of Agriculture in the formulation of agricultural growth and transformation strategy, developing various thematic policies, setting-up coordination mechanisms (intergovernmental, inter-sectoral and stakeholder), and building capacity on policy formulation, implementation and monitoring and evaluation. Prior to joining FAO, Mulat Demeke was the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics of Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia), and taught courses and conducted research at Addis Ababa University and Haramaya University.
